Asset and BIM

Enabling Asset Data Integration

To provide the end-to-end data and systems integration we believe is needed for true whole life asset management, we have partnered with Mitra Innovation, the team behind BIM-as-a-Service (BIMaaS), based on the robust, scalable and proven WS02 platform.

We know there is a lot more to BIM than 3D models and technology alone.

We know this as our team is involved in all aspects of BIM, from Information Management to BIM training. Some of these wider issues that will enable business and industry-wide uptake of BIM are: people (training, upskilling and competency development), process improvement, data standards, information management, procurement alignment, supply chain management, cyber security… and more.

We are focused on the management of data and information for the whole-life of assets (buildings / infrastructure assets). Construction is important, but some asset last a very long time - let's get the right data we need now to operate and maintain. We understand this - we recommend you look-up ISO 55000, developed from PAS 55

But, technology does form a part and is vital. A Common Data Environment (CDE) is needed (not one tool, but an 'environment'). When it comes to technology to enable BIM processes - from experience - we know that almost always one software package alone will not be able to fulfil all your business-wide needs. That's not a problem, different vendors offer softwares and platforms to do what they do best. We can't all be expert in the same thing.

Q: But, don't we need to bring data and information together to get real value? A: Yes, we need data integration.

So, data and information systems integration becomes critical. All data doesn't need to be in the same place - the same server, for example. We integrate it using agree standards and schema. That's what Open BIM is about.

In the UK, as we move from Level 2 BIM toward Level 3 BIM, or Digital Built Britain, integrated, secure and real-time data will eventually become the norm.

BIM as a Service is the only enterprise grade open source platform for asset data integration and BIM governance.

Gain complete visibility of all building information management data across your entire business or projects, share asset data securely with other departments and third party suppliers – including infrastructure, operational and maintenance – and enforce BIM compliance using BIMaaS. Built for asset management executives, buildings and civils managers, large infrastructure project managers and CIOs in sectors such as rail, aviation, utilities, oil and gas, and construction.

With GeoEnable and Mitra Innovation. Below is a summary of the video:

The challenge:

Common challenges faced by organisations that manage physical assets and facilities are that they often have disparate asset and facilities information systems and teams, with no common view of our assets or facilities.

Does this sound familiar to you? If so, you are not alone.

It is typical to find that information systems have inconsistent data with little or no ‘metadata’ to describe, where the data is from, who created it, what is should/shouldn’t be used for and why the data was initially captured.

In short, there is no single source of data. No one truth. This introduces risk and creates inefficiencies.

The Solution:

The key is integration:

  • People and Process: Integration across teams; integration between business processes & standards – these must be established to ensure long term success.

  • Technology and Data: It is vital these are underpinned by robust technologies that allow the management and validation of new data as well as integration of existing information systems.
